How To Pray
how to pray

What is prayer?

I consider prayer for me to be talking to God (or whatever God is in the context of a massive celestial event that we as humans have interpreted God to be).

You may have different thoughts about who or what you want to pray to, which is okay with me.

AI tells me prayer is a solemn request for help or expression of gratitude addressed to a deity or spiritual being. I can live with that definition, too.

I believe God as a concept is very subjective each person, and this post is more about connecting to grace, hope, and love than trying to identify the who/how/why.

The best thing? There is no wrong way to pray.

Humans need hope, mythology, stories, and connection. We also need rituals and ceremonies to help us connect. Prayer is a simple ritual to connect with our deepest roots, highest needs, and untapped potential for joy.

We all have different paths, beliefs, and needs -- so if you feel moved to connect -- here's what you can do:

  1. Set Your Intention.

    1. You need a reason to pray. This could be as simple as saying "Thank You", "Help Me", or even sending an emotion as a form of prayer through reflection.

    2. You may also want to have a longer, more formal prayer on a topic, and that is also fine.

  2. If You Can, Begin by Finding a Comfortable Quiet Space.

    1. If you can't - that's ok. Just be aware of your surroundings. There is no right or wrong way to pray. The intention in your heart is the most important thing.

  3. It Can Be Helpful if you can Relax and Breathe.

    1. I know, I know...why does everyone want you to relax and breathe? After all, you are breathing or you'd be dead...right? Lighthearted joking aside, being able to relax your body and then breathe let's you know that you are actually IN your body. This canters your mind, your body and your thoughts. That's helpful when setting intentions and sending those intentions up and out.

  4. Express Your Thoughts and/or Your Feelings

    1. Even if you don't feel like you can, it is ok to allow your emotions, hopes, concerns or anything else you wish to express come forward. You can pray out loud if you feel called to, or you can keep your words silent and between who you are praying to and yourself.

  5. Take a Second or a Moment to Listen & Reflect

    1. This can be a time for silent contemplation or meditation, allowing thoughts and feelings to settle. You may feel guided by insights, and you may not. If it feels good to just pause for a second in a sacred space of your creation, do so.

  6. End Your Prayer with Gratitude

    1. End your prayer with a moment of gratitude, acknowledging the time spent in reflection and any insights gained.

Practice makes perfect (although nothing is ever perfect), but with practice, you'll feel more connected with your higher power.
